Finding Connection Through Video Games

Exploring the Power of Video Games to Relax, Connect, and Enhance Well-Being

Hi, I’m Derek Lockwood, a 35-year-old lifelong gamer. From FPS and MMOs to RPGs, beat ‘em ups, adventure games, and many more. Heck, as a toddler I somehow deleted my dad’s Super Mario World save file, right when he was finally going to fight Bowser and beat the game. If a game boasts stunning visuals, a compelling story, or tried-and-true gameplay, chances are I’ve either played it or it’s sitting in my massive backlog, waiting for its turn.

For me, video games started as a way to unwind and escape the daily grind. They offered a chance to unplug from reality for a few hours and immerse myself in another universe. But over time, gaming has become much more than just a hobby—it’s become a way to feel connected.

Like many of you reading this, I’ve met amazing people across the internet through gaming. I’ve forged long-lasting friendships, just way of joining a Halo 2 lobby with someone who clicked with me. Maybe you’ve had a similar experience—joining a Discord community server for your favorite game and discovering a new best friend just a few messages away.

Get Good is a blog dedicated to exploring the many physical and mental benefits of gaming, topics that deserve more attention. Whether it’s through scientific studies or the stories shared by gamers worldwide, we’ll dive into the positive impact video games can have on our lives.

Let’s celebrate the power of gaming, together.
