Why I’m Thankful for Video Games

How Games Bring Joy, Connection, and Lasting Memories to the Holiday Table

As Thanksgiving rolls around, it’s a time to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the moments that bring us closer to the ones we love. This holiday, I find myself particularly thankful for games—those shared experiences that add a unique warmth to our gatherings and help create memories that last long after the holiday season ends.

Games have this incredible way of bringing families and friends together, especially across generations. Whether it’s a spirited round of Pictionary, an epic Monopoly showdown, or something simpler like a trivia challenge. Games bridge age gaps, giving grandparents, parents, and kids a chance to interact as equals. It’s heartwarming to see everyone get involved, laughing, strategizing, and maybe even learning something new about each other along the way. These shared moments make us feel closer, giving us memories to smile back on for years to come.

There’s something special about looking back on that hilarious mistake someone made during charades or the unforgettable time a family member staged a comeback in a close game. These moments become part of our family lore, the stories we tell at future gatherings, keeping the spirit of past Thanksgivings alive and creating a sense of continuity and tradition.

In a world where we’re often distracted by screens, games also bring us back to what really matters: face-to-face connection. Games encourage us to communicate, to really listen, and to engage with each other on a personal level. They create a comfortable space where we can open up, share stories, and be fully present, making way for the kind of meaningful conversations that strengthen family bonds.

This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for the simple yet positive impact video games have provided over the years. They remind us that some of the best things in life don’t come from fancy plans or elaborate setups—they come from being together, laughing, competing, and cherishing every moment. Games are a small but meaningful part of our holiday tradition, and I couldn’t be more thankful for them.

Happy Thanksgiving 💙
